A Legacy Rooted in Faith: Honoring an Uncle’s Generosity

George Sevick’s life was a testament to faith, humility, and love. Born and raised in Philadelphia, George grew up in a Slovak Catholic family deeply connected to Saint Agnes Church. His life—filled with quiet devotion—may have seemed unassuming. Still, his generosity will resonate for generations through an endowment in his will That supports priestly formation at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary.

George’s nephew, Joseph Sevick, speaks of him with deep affection. “He was more than my uncle. He was my godfather and best friend,” Joseph says. Their bond was unique, built on years of shared memories and unwavering support. Even amidst the grief of George's passing, Joseph found solace and purpose in fulfilling his uncle’s wishes.

George’s commitment to his faith was evident throughout his life. A daily communicant, he served his parish in countless ways: as an usher, treasurer, and volunteer. During Christmas and Easter, George led the decoration of Saint Agnes Church, often enlisting his family to help. “He was the most humble and kind person I’ve ever known,” Joseph reflects. “He gave his time and talents to the Church without expecting anything in return.”

As he grew older, George recognized the financial challenges faced by seminarians preparing for the priesthood. “If he could relive his life, I believe he would have become a priest himself,” Joseph shares. Instead, George supported seminarians through his savings, ensuring that young men answering God’s call would have the necessary resources to succeed. Before his passing, he entrusted Joseph with the responsibility of creating an endowment to honor this vision in perpetuity.

Carrying out his uncle’s wishes was deeply personal for Joseph. “Working with The Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia was the best decision,” Joseph says. “They understood my uncle’s wishes and handled everything with care and professionalism.” The Foundation’s team guided Joseph through the process, ensuring the endowment was established exactly as George envisioned. Today, the Sevick and Kuzmik Scholarship Fund of The Catholic Foundation provides critical financial support to seminarians in the School of Theology at Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary, reducing the burdens they face as they prepare for lives of service.

“Uncle George would be so proud,” Joseph says, his voice filled with emotion. “I know he’s looking down, beaming, knowing his dream has been fulfilled.” For Joseph, the experience of working with The Catholic Foundation has been profoundly rewarding. “They truly understand donors and their intentions. Their commitment to ensuring my uncle’s legacy lives on gives me confidence that his impact will last forever.”

George’s story is a powerful reminder of how one person’s faith and generosity can ripple outward, shaping the lives of others for generations. For Joseph, it is also a deeply personal testament to the man he deeply loved. “He was the best person I’ve ever known,” Joseph says. “His life may have been quiet, but his legacy is extraordinary.”
